Egg Freezing After 35: What You Need to Know

Age affects egg quality, but egg freezing after 35 is still a viable option for many women. We explain the science, realistic expectations, and what the process looks like at our Saipan clinic.

The most common question we hear from women in their mid-to-late thirties: “Is it too late to freeze my eggs?”

The honest answer is: it depends — but for most women, the answer is no, it’s not too late. What matters is understanding what egg freezing can realistically achieve at your age, and making a decision based on that understanding rather than anxiety or false hope.

The Biology of Age and Egg Quality

Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have — approximately 1–2 million at birth, declining to around 300,000–500,000 by puberty and continuing to decrease throughout reproductive life. By age 35, the average woman has around 25,000–50,000 eggs remaining, though this varies significantly.

More important than quantity is quality: as eggs age, the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities increases. A 25-year-old woman has roughly 75–80% chromosomally normal eggs. By age 35, that number is closer to 50–60%. By 40, it may drop to 20–30%.

This is why:

  1. Older women may need more retrieval cycles to collect enough viable eggs
  2. PGT-A (genetic testing of embryos) becomes more valuable with age
  3. Realistic expectations are important when counseling older patients

Vitrification: Modern Egg Freezing Is Not What It Was

Until around 2012, egg freezing used a slow-freeze method that resulted in ice crystal formation, damaging eggs and producing poor survival rates. This is why old statistics about egg freezing “not working” are outdated.

Vitrification is a flash-freezing technique that eliminates ice crystal formation by cooling eggs at an extremely rapid rate (around 23,000°C per minute) using cryoprotectants. Eggs are essentially suspended in a glass-like state with no cellular damage.

At Saipan IVF Center, our egg survival rate after vitrification is 90–97% — consistent with the best international standards. This means that if we freeze 10 mature eggs, 9–10 of them will survive the thaw intact.

These are averages. Individual results vary based on ovarian reserve (measured by AMH level and antral follicle count), which can be tested before you decide whether to proceed.


Why Freeze Eggs Rather Than Embryos?

Eggs can be fertilized to create embryos, which are then frozen — but this requires sperm. Many women choosing to freeze in their 30s are not currently partnered, or are not yet sure who their co-parent will be.

Freezing eggs preserves options:

  • Flexibility: You can use a future partner’s sperm, or choose donor sperm later
  • Ownership: Eggs are legally yours; embryo disputes in separations can be complex
  • Timing: You decide when (and if) to use them

If you’re in a committed relationship and not opposed to creating embryos now, embryo freezing does have slightly higher survival rates per unit due to the selection process (fertilization itself eliminates non-viable eggs).


The Process at Saipan IVF Center

Here’s what egg freezing looks like in practice:

Step 1: Initial consultation (remote possible) We review your medical history, recent bloodwork (FSH, AMH, E2), and ultrasound findings. If you haven’t had these done, we can guide you to labs in your home city.

Step 2: Protocol design Your stimulation protocol is customized based on your ovarian reserve. We use antagonist or long agonist protocols depending on your profile, aiming to retrieve the optimal number of mature eggs without over-stimulating.

Step 3: Travel to Saipan (Stimulation phase) You’ll need to be in Saipan for approximately 10–12 days for the stimulation and monitoring phase. Injections are daily self-administered; monitoring involves ultrasound + bloodwork every 2–3 days.

Step 4: Trigger shot & retrieval When follicles reach target size, you receive a trigger injection. Egg retrieval occurs 36 hours later — a brief procedure (15–20 minutes) performed under light sedation.

Step 5: Vitrification Mature eggs are assessed and vitrified the same day. You’ll know how many eggs were successfully frozen before you return home.

Step 6: Return home Recovery from egg retrieval is typically 1–2 days. Most patients feel well enough to travel within 48–72 hours.


What Does It Cost?

Egg freezing at Saipan IVF Center starts from USD $13,800, which includes the full monitoring, retrieval, ICSI assessment, vitrification, and 12 months of storage.

When you’re ready to use your eggs — whether in 2 years or 10 years — a frozen embryo transfer (FET) with a partner or donor sperm is priced from USD $15,000.

Is It Worth It After 35?

The honest answer is: it depends on your AMH and antral follicle count. Before deciding, we strongly recommend a baseline ovarian reserve assessment. If your reserve is within a reasonable range, egg freezing can absolutely be a worthwhile investment in future fertility.

If your reserve is already low, we’ll discuss whether egg freezing is likely to yield enough eggs to be meaningful, and what alternatives (including egg donation) might be worth considering.
